The Extech MO220 is a pin-style, conductivity moisture meter specifically designed for wood applications though it also measures moisture in other building materials.
It scored reasonably high in accuracy tests when measuring moisture content (MC) in the mid-range. However, this meter and its heavy duty probe accessory are incapable of taking readings when the MC is 7% or below.
The Delmhorst J-4 is an analog pin-type meter that can be used for measuring moisture in wood and other building materials. This no-frills, basic meter performed well in our accuracy tests, except that it does not maintain its accuracy when surface moisture is present.
CRITICAL FLAW ALERT!
This meter exhibits a critical flaw—namely its inability to read below 7% moisture content. This flaw renders the meter essentially unusable for a number of common applications, including for flooring installations and furniture making. We deducted one star from our overall rating to reflect this critical flaw.
The GE Timbermaster’s hammer electrode is one of the accessories available for the Timbermaster meter. It facilitates measurement of moisture deep within the wood sample.
In spite of the slide hammer’s solid appearance, the electrode tended to malfunction during our testing. Several times the crimp broke off the wire inside the head of the electrode.
CRITICAL FLAW ALERT!
This meter exhibits a critical flaw—namely its inability to provide results below 8% moisture content, even though the manual states it gives readings to 5% moisture content. This flaw renders the meter essentially unusable for a number of common applications, including for flooring installations and furniture making. We deducted one star from our overall rating to reflect this critical flaw.
CRITICAL FLAW ALERT!
This meter exhibits a critical flaw—namely its inability to read below 12% moisture content. This flaw renders the meter essentially unusable for a number of common applications, including for flooring installations and furniture making. We deducted two stars from our overall rating to reflect this critical flaw.
CRITICAL FLAW ALERT!
This meter exhibits a critical flaw—namely its very low score for accuracy. The meter also has a relative lack of precision when measuring wood samples above 12% moisture content (MC). We deducted one star from our overall rating to reflect its critical flaw related to accuracy.
CRITICAL FLAW ALERT!
This meter exhibits a critical flaw—namely its inability to provide results below 8% moisture content, even though the manual states it gives readings to 5.5% moisture content. This flaw renders the meter essentially unusable for a number of common applications, including for flooring installations and furniture making. We deducted one star from our overall rating to reflect this critical flaw.
