The Electrophysics CMT-908 is not recommended due to accuracy-related issues above 17% and below 8% MC along with the difficulty of replacing broken pins.
Although the level of accuracy at a high moisture content is not as critical as accuracy at lower MC, this meter is hard to justify. Our testing indicated that better meters are available in this price range.
In this review, our test results focused on the pin-style operation of this dual mode moisture meter.
To see test results for this meter’s pinless mode, see the separate CMT-908 pin-less review.
While there is much to like about this meter, one should be aware that it is not as accurate as some meters in its price range. In addition, it lacks features one might expect, such as a data HOLD function and ergonomic design.
Pros
- Solid construction, built to last
- Easy-to-read digital display
- Dual-mode design (both pin-less and pin-style)
Cons
- Lacks ergonomic design
- Reduced accuracy above 17% MC and below 8% MC
- Replacement of broken pins requires a square-drive screwdriver, rather than slotted or Phillips drive
Electrophysics CMT-908 Moisture Meter Review (Pinless-mode)
Before you buy, learn how this meter performed in pinless mode.
Objective Evaluation – Overall Score 3.6 out of 5.0
Accuracy – 4.2 out of 5.0
This meter provided reasonably accurate readings from 8% to about 17% MC when compared to ASTM D4442 oven dry standards. Below 8% and above 17% MC, this meter is somewhat less accurate with a tendency toward low readings when compared to oven dry standards.

Surface Moisture – 1.0 out of 5.0
Surface moisture caused this meter to post readings about 12% higher than the baseline. These surface moisture results indicate that operating this meter in high humidity environments where condensation may form on the surface could lead to questionable readings.

Meter Temperature – 2.3 out of 5.0
Meter temperature had a significant effect on this meter’s MC readings but only when meter temperature is high.
A high meter temperature of 110° F in the presence of both low and high MC, decreased the reading by about 1% MC compared to the room temperature reading.
A low meter temperature of 34.8° F did not affect moisture content readings compared to the room temperature reading.

Wood Temperature – 4.0 out of 5.0
Wood temperature affected this meter’s readings.
A low wood temperature of 33.6° F in the presence of low MC showed an approximately 1% decrease in the reading when compared to the room temperature reading. In the presence of high MC, the reading decreased about 2%.
A high wood temperature of 110° F in the presence of high MC showed about a 1% increase in the reading when compared to the room temperature reading. In the presence of low MC, the reading did not change appreciably.

Reading Repeatability – 3.0 out of 5.0
The readings of this meter were not entirely repeatable, showing some tendency to vary.

Drift – 5.0 out of 5.0
Readings for this meter showed no tendency to drift after 3 seconds.
Cable Interference – N/A
This meter does not offer cabled accessories so the cable interference test could not be conducted.

Subjective Evaluation – Overall Score 3.5 out of 5.0
Ease of Use – 2.8 out of 5.0
The CMT-908 is relatively easy to operate with two-button operation. The meter is not entirely intuitive such that it is necessary to consult the manual. Operating instructions in the manual are adequate and include the necessary species and temperature correction tables. Replacement of broken pins can be a challenge, requiring a nonstandard type of screwdriver.
Quality – 3.7 out of 5.0
The meter’s casing is extremely solid and suggests quality, durable construction. From all appearances, this meter is built to last. No carrying case is provided.
Comfort – 3.0 out of 5.0
This meter has a large, box-like design that is not as comfortable to hold or as easy to transport as some of the other meters we tested. Its digital display is extremely easy to read.
Versatility – 3.0 out of 5.0
The CMT-908 is dual mode (both pin-less and pin-style), which makes it useful for a variety of applications. When using as a pin-style meter, the display is viewed upside down. The meter adjusts the moisture reading according to the wood density entered for a particular species or species group.
Range – 5.0 out of 5.0
The meter is rated for measurements for a range of moisture content levels down to 4% MC according to the manual. In practice, our tests indicated that readings at low and/or high MC levels (below about 8% MC and above about 17% MC) are not as accurate and tend to read somewhat low.
Features – 2.5 out of 5.0
Readings precise to the nearest 1%. Offers an easy calibration check function. No data HOLD function for use in tight spaces where the display cannot be easily viewed. Includes low battery indicator (flashing LCD display).
Customer Service – 4.5 out of 5.0
Electrophysics offers a two-year warranty for the CMT-908. Service by telephone and email is fast and friendly. A service center for warranty issues and other repairs is available in Ontario, Canada.
