The TotalCheck is a dual-mode (both pin and pinless) meter that can be used for measuring moisture in wood and other building materials. Its versatility allows it to even be used for RH testing in concrete. Its rugged build should stand up well to a lot of use. It utilizes several navigation buttons that require some use of the manual to gain familiarity. Accuracy test results indicate that this meter has some limits, especially when MC falls below 8% MC.
The TotalCheck’s reasonable accuracy, except below 8% MC, its versatility, offering both pin and pinless modes, its many features, and its sturdy construction all make it a reasonable choice for many applications, especially where a pin-type meter is preferred.
Pros
- Many features, including the ability to store up to 1400 readings.
- Capable of being used with a variety of building materials.
- Built-in calibration check, plus thermo-hygrometer with RH sensor.
- Ergonomically designed with sturdy construction.
Cons
- Issues with accuracy below 8%.
- Pinless (or scan) mode gives relative readings only.
- Tendency for readings to drift.
Objective Evaluation – Overall Score 4.3 out of 5.0
Accuracy – 4.3 out of 5.0
This meter provided reasonable accuracy, especially in the mid-range from about 8% to 20% MC. Below about 8% MC, our testing found that the TotalCheck did not give reliable readings when compared to ASTM D4442 oven-dry standards. In addition, above 20% MC, there was a tendency for readings to be somewhat low for Ponderosa pine and somewhat high for Douglas fir samples, when compared to ASTM D4442 standards.

Meter Temperature Test – 5.0 out of 5.0
Meter temperature had a relatively minor effect on this meter’s readings at both low MC and high MC. For example, a high meter temperature of 110° F in the presence of high MC decreased the reading by about 0.8% MC compared to the room temperature reading. Similarly, a low meter temperature of 34.8° F in the presence of high MC increased the reading by about 1.2% MC.

Wood Temperature Test – 4.0 out of 5.0
Wood temperature affected this meter’s readings to some extent, especially at high MC. At a low wood temperature of 33.6° F in the presence of high MC, the reading changed about 1.5% MC when compared to the room temperature reading. At a high wood temperature of 110° F In the presence of high MC, the reading increased by about 2% MC.

With an ergonomically-designed shape, this meter fits nicely in one’s hand. It is not compact enough to fit easily into a shirt pocket, but it does come with a sturdy case to protect the meter when transporting it from one job site to the next.
Versatility – 5.0 out of 5.0
This is a dual-mode meter (both pin and pinless modes). Capable of giving relative readings in a variety of non-wood building materials.
Range – 5.0 out of 5.0
The TotalCheck reads from 5% to 60% MC. However, it is worth noting that measurements taken at lower moisture levels below about 8% MC tend not to be as accurate.
Features – 4.6 out of 5.0
The TotalCheck is a feature-rich meter. It is capable of storing up to 1400 readings with date and time stamp. It includes a built-in thermo-hygrometer with a relative humidity sensor, as well as a built-in calibration check and low battery indicator.
