Also referred to as a “pinless” moisture meter, non-destructive meters use an electromagnetic wave or high frequency signal to determine the moisture content of wood and other building materials. This technology makes it possible to “scan” a length of lumber or material surface for an overall indication of moisture content along the entire area.

Like all meters, non-destructive meters can be sensitive to additional materials below the material’s surface that falls within the signal’s range such as structural metals or framing materials. Most, however, measure at approximately a 5/8" - 3/4" depth which helps prevent interference.

Generally designed for domestic and/or exotic wood, non-destructive meters also measure moisture content in a range of building materials including concrete, stucco, flooring, plaster, drywall, roofing, fiberglass and more, making them ideal as a building inspection moisture meter.

Non-destructive meters are available with digital readouts, for higher accuracy in readings, or with analog indicators, for relative readings.
